B'NAI SHOLOM OFFERS BEGINNING HEBREW COURSE AND HELP FOR NEW READERS

on Thursday, 20 September 2012.

B'nai Sholom Reform Congregation in Albany is offering a beginning Hebrew class for those who want to learn the language of their faith and a practice program for new Hebrew readers.

The “Beginning Hebrew” course will be offered Sunday mornings starting September 30 from 9:30 until 10:30 at B’nai Sholom Reform Congregation, 420 Whitehall Road, Albany.

Taught by congregant Carol Smith, this course will cover the names and sounds of the Hebrew alphabet with lots of practice reading. The class is geared toward beginning Hebrew readers, but it also is appropriate for anyone who wants to brush up on reading skills.

Fee for the course is $45 ($30 for B’nai Sholom members) plus cost of the required textbook. Registration for the class is required.

Starting November 11, B’nai Sholom will offer a free Hebrew Reading Practice program targeted toward beginning Hebrew readers, especially those who have learned the Hebrew alphabet and not much else. Each Sunday from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. on days when Religious School is in session, an experienced Hebrew reader will coordinate the group in individual reading practice. This is the very best way to improve: reading out loud, on your own, at your own pace, with an experienced person there to assist.

Both programs are open to the public.

For more information or to register, contact the B’nai Sholom office at 518-482-5283 or office@bnaisholom.albany.ny.us.

B'NAI SHOLOM OFFERS YIDDISH CLASSES FOR YOUNG AND OLD

on Thursday, 20 September 2012.

B'nai Sholom Reform Congregation in Albany is offering two courses for those who want to learn about and speak Yiddish.

Beginning and advanced Yiddish classes will be held Wednesday evenings starting October 10. All classes are held at B’nai Sholom Reform Congregation, 420 Whitehall Road, Albany.

The courses introduce students to the Yiddish language by using both a textbook with accompanying instructional media and the teacher’s own experiences as a Yiddish speaker. They are geared to two levels of Yiddish proficiency: the beginners’ classes will start with the basics of the language, while the advanced classes will be geared to those with a working knowledge of it.

Both courses are taught by Rachel Weitz, an Israeli native speaker of Hebrew and Yiddish who teaches both languages in the Capital Region. Weitz holds a master’s degree in Jewish education and a bachelor’s degree in modern Middle East history and Arabic language and literature.

Following is the schedule of the courses’ days and times:

Advanced Yiddish – starting October 10, eight Wednesdays from 6:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.;

Beginner Yiddish – starting October 10, eight Wednesdays from 7:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m.

The Yiddish courses are open to the public. Fee for each is $55 plus cost of required textbook and CDs or tapes. Registration is required. Students may register for a class at any time.
