Gossip weakens the moral fabric of our society by rending relationships. Our Sages warned us about gossipers: “Tell me what YOU think of so-and-so” and then the zinger comes. Gossip can jump out suddenly or insinuate itself in the most subtle ways and always for “the best of intentions.”
The Sages also criticize the passive listener. One who does not stop the gossiper is compared to a hole which a weasel can hop down. Stop up the holes and the gossip has no place to go.
In this course we will learn how to identify and respond to gossip. What do we say? What can we do? From our everyday conversation to the media pundits who bombard us nightly, our tradition has wise advice on how to listen and respond.
…the Torah, the Talmud, modern literature and personal anecdotes – these will be our sources.
